Owning a retail store can be a great source of income, especially if you have a successful shop. However, retail store ownership is not without its risks. Not only must you worry about making a profit every month, you have to contend with day to day security issues, such as shoplifting. Shoplifting is a problem for retail store owners everywhere. It does not matter if the store is a big, chain store, like Wal-Mart, or a small mom-and-pop store – there is always a risk for shoplifting. Learning how to reduce shoplifting is the best defense against sticky fingers.
Pay attention to the layout of your store. Keep your aisles arranged in a way that makes it easy for clerks to keep an eye out. Use mirrors in the corners to protect those areas that are out of sight. You can also use surveillance equipment to monitor your store.
Keep your expensive items under lock and key in cabinets. Make sure your more expensive items are farther away from the door and in clear sight of your clerks. Your less expensive items can be situated near the front of the store. Utilize security tags for some of your items.
Limit the number of garments that can be taken in to fitting rooms and make sure your fitting room clerk is aware of items going in and out of the rooms.
Pay attention to customers that seem to be loitering without putting any items in their baskets. Keep an eye on the ones that wander around and leave without making a purchase.
Keep your staff involved in your fight against shoplifting. Make sure they greet each customer as they come in because shoplifters are less likely to steal if they think they can be recognized. Encourage your staff to pay attention to the customers and offer assistance when a customer seems to be shopping without any purpose. Keeping your staff on their toes will help minimize shoplifting because the thieves will not have a chance to pocket any items.
